Located on the “Costa do Descobrimento”, listed as a World Natural Heritage Site by Unesco in 1999, and considered the cradle of history and culture in Brazil, the district of Arraial d`Ajuda is a tribute to Tomé de Souza and the first Jesuits who landed in the region of Bahia in 1549, with the ships Conceição, Salvador and Ajuda.

Its natural beauty enchants tourists. Due to its privileged location, Arraial d'Ajuda is surrounded by several natural attractions - such as beaches, coral reefs, coves, cliffs, mangroves and navigable rivers.

During the construction of the chapel, in 1549, of the First Marian Sanctuary in Brazil, Jesuit priests found a source of water that, providentially, they considered miraculous. Today, many tourists bathe in the chapel's fountain.

On March 16, 2022, the Porto Seguro City Hall declared the NS d'Ajuda festival, which takes place from August 7 to 15, an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the municipality. The pilgrimage receives approximately 20,000 tourists annually.
